Projects : Paradise/Paradox
Our Father | The Journey | Looking | Migrations | Paintings/Prints/Collages
Paradise/Paradox is a video that shows an idyllic tropical scene found in the Virgin Islands – hardly changed from time immemorial. In the video the scene changes very slowly – almost imperceptibly – the video is shown in a darkened room projected on three panels of gauzy fabric creating a moving three-dimensional scene that is impacted by the viewer. In the Virgin Islands our Paradise is fraught with the economic and social demands of over-development, environmental pollution and unplanned land use resulting in visual chaos and social conflict. The truth is that much of the Paradise that Columbus found and the Taino Indians enjoyed as well as the abundant fertility is still ours to enjoy. How we regard this blessing that the Arawak Indians held in the highest spiritual and social regard is the critical question. My work attempts to highlight this Paradox.
